Metronom to ban Alcohol on train services
Metronom, the private operator of trains between Gottingen, Hannover, Hamburg, Bremen & Cuxhaven is introducing a total ban on Alcohol on their services.
Glass bottles will also be prohibited. The announcement was made in September and is done to cut out drunken behaviour and vandalism by certain members of the public who use their services.
Just how this will be policed is still yet to be seen.....

Talgo trains between Hamburg/Berlin & Munchen to cease.....
As a some of you may know, from the timetable change in December 2009 the use of Talgo stock on services between the stations mentioned above will end.
These services will now be replaced by conventional sleeper stock, it looks like this is happening throughout ...

DB Regio Tyne and Wear
Just found the following link for DB Regio Tyne & Wear Metro, or should we now call it 'The T & W Stadtbahn' ?
I wonder just how many more routes within the UK DB will take over. Having travelled on various routes in Germany that DB operate I hope they can improve things all round to the quality they have over there.

Snowdrifts hamper rail and road transport in Germany
Drifting snow in the north provide traffic problems this week for all rail operators. Many trains failed and some were cancelled.

FIP Travel restrictions in Germany
For those of you who are lucky enough to work within the British railway industry then you may or may not know that ATOC have recently updated their website with a list of private operators in Germany that FIP passes are not valid on. Details and information is available from ATOC's own website by clicking here
After having a look it doesn't look very good for those of us who have the pleasure of obtaining coupons for travel. By the way we see it, it leaves only BD Germanys national rail operator with whom you may use coupons with.
For those of us who travel within Germany all is not lost as there is still the fact that DB still does fame itself on it's low fares and the fact you can get Leander tickets for upto 5 persons who can together travel from roughly 08:30 to 03:00 unlimited. Leander tickets start from €28 see here for more details
For example.......
Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein-Ticket
Package price: 30 EUR if you buy online or at the ticket machine. 32 EUR at Reisezentrum.
This ticket is valid from Monday to Sunday for one day of your choice from 9 a.m. until 3 a.m. of the following day on Saturday, Sundays and bank holidays from 0 until 3 a.m the following day. It can be used on all local trains (Regional-Express, Regionalbahn, S-Bahn) and the transport systems in Hamburger Verkehrsverbundes (HVV) zone A and B, in the Kieler Verkehrsverbundes (VRK), Tarifgemeinschaft Lübeck (TGL) and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in regional trains.
Leander tickets are available for travel on all days only, for those who wish to travel on weekends and wish to travel to other areas in Germany (from north to south etc) then the option best suited for this is the Schoenes wochenende ticket. Similar to the leander ticket this allows a group of 5 unlimited travel on a Saturday or Sunday throughout the whole of Germany for only €37 click here for details

Planning your trip around Deutschland
Planning your trip to Germany should start before you even book your flights and rail tickets, or so I think.....
You may ask yourself how on earth do that? Well I find as others do that the following publication is a bible to German railways......
Eisenbahnatlas Deutschland published by Schweers + Wall is a great publication for all visitors to Germany. There are a few places that it can be purchased from, I use Platform 5 usually, they are usually pretty good with price and postage is pretty sharp. But there are a few other places you could try, they are as follows.......
Motor Books and Ian Allan both sell the updated book 2009/2010 issue... (click on the names to follow the links)
The ISBN is ISBN 9783894941390 and costs from £30 to £40, but this book will last for a few years and will become a book that you will use over and over again. The book I have and currently use was published in 2000, so I think it will be on my 'To buy' list this for this year. I tend to mark the lines I have travelled by using highlighter pens, so I know if I have travelled a new line or not.

Berlin as the capital of the United Germany has quite a few large stations, Berlin Ostbahnhof being the largest out to the east. Now if you want to bash and collect numbers for haulage then this is where you should work to and from.
Start at the new Berlin Hbf (Berlin main station) and jump at each station as follows
Berlin Hbf - Berlin Friedrichstrase
Friedrichstrase - Berlin Alexanderplatz
Alexanderplatz - Ostbahnhof
And then do the same in reverse.....
Now, if you feel brave and want to get the Russian sleeper in your book for haulage then it is possible although not entirely a move that can be deemed legal. The worst they can do is to chuck you off at the next station, well that's where we were going anyway, Berlin Hbf.....

This is Bhf Sarstedt south of Hannover.
It's an easy bash, under 30 mins from Hannover. We visited there last May when we were on a summer bash, come to think about it we were there the summer before too.....

Bahn Bashers are now on Facebook
To Bash or not to Bash?
Well, looking at Ryanairs website the other day and it seems they have some good offers on for June on flights from Edinburgh to Dusseldorf Weeze, Bremen and Berlin. I have a fondness of the 143, 112 and 114 class electrics and still need to get more in the book. Must also look to see where the rabbits are working, my favorite class of German diesels.
Would love to discover the south sometime but there is still so much to do in the north. May just have to get the Bahn Atlas out, stick a pin in it and take pot luck... Rostock and Kiel were two options last year that never made it into our planned itinerary so they have to be done. Also need to get down to Frankfurt Oder (Towards the Polish Border), a place that has also been on the list for sometime along with Sylt (Westerland, towards the Danish border)
